International Musuem of Art & Science - Armando Garcia, Week 2

Compared to last week, this week was pretty slow and quiet.

On Monday I kept researching another topic from the previous week, Latinx Heros in the media. My supervisor had told me that in the past a local comic book store had reached out to the museum and wanted to collaborate with them, but she didn't have a good idea for them. Since it was a comic store, I suggested doing presentations on Latinx superheroes. We had conversations about representation in media during Washington week and they are what inspired this idea. There are only a few Latinx superheroes that are well known, but there are many more that go unknown. Bringing Latin characters like Araña, Hummingbird, and Bunker into the mainstream can help inspire young Latinx people since they can see heroes that look like them and with backgrounds similar to theirs.

Tuesday and Wednesday I had to research more activities and presentations that could be done during the Dia de Los Muertos event. The activity I found that seemed the most interesting was candle painting. The practice originated in Salamanca Guanajuato, Mexico with the candles shaped like skulls and are uniquely painted. While the candles won’t be shaped like skulls, people can paint skulls onto their candles among other designs like flowers or butterflies.

On Thursday and Friday, I assisted the person in charge of the art room for the day. I helped her distribute the supplies and clean up after the kids when they were done painting. Both days were pretty easy with some free time since kids came in randomly so she told me to paint when no one was in the room. I decided to attempt to paint something, but it came out looking similar to what the kids were painting. Mysteriously it disappeared. Very weird.
