LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes - Jazzlyn Gonzalez, Week 2
Hello again everyone! Week 2 has been very exciting and filled with lots of new experiences. La Plaza had an interactive staff meeting across the street at la Cocina, a kitchen where visitors can learn more about the tastes and how to cook Mexican cuisine. We first discussed new changes at La Plaza and then separated into different groups that would on the different parts of the meal, tofu tacos with watermelon agua fresca. I personally helped on making the tortillas by flattening the dough with tortilla pressers and then throwing them on the comal. It was a very new experience that taught me more about my own culture and helped me see how offering programs like cooking classes can help visitors to La Plaza feel more of a connection to their community.

Last week I also helped out in a school visit! Some of the other education department staff and I traveled to an elementary in LA where we did a lesson on cactus, specifically nopales. We guided the students in creating their own nopal on a clay tile. This was an amazing opportunity for me to be able to observe museums taking themselves to the school and how kids of different ages can benefit from such a program!
Other than these two events that occurred during the week, I was still mainly focused on helping to plan out the pamphlet for the family event LA Plaza is having on Dia de los Muertos. This was usually tidying up the details of my work like the specific steps of the activists listed in the pamphlet and offering my help to Gema who has been focused on the design.
Towards the end of the week there was exposure to someone in the office who had covid, so I’ve had to work from home the past few days. However, I’m looking forward to returning for my third week!
