National Museum of the American Latino - Francisco Ciraulo, Week 2

 Week two!

Are we already more than halfway done with our internships? I’m going to walk myself right into the cliche and say that time is flying by.

Monday was my first day working at the learning lounge! After last week’s brief of how to work the space, I was ready to get on the museum floor and interact with some visitors! Well, I thought I was; I’m sure I would have been. Monday turned out to be a slow day for the learning lounge, so I ended up spending most of my time playing dominoes and perusing the gallery. While I was looking forward to seeing some more visitors, it was a learning experience. We are now shifting the learning lounge schedule around the slow Monday crowd, and now have more reason to create clear signage to signal people into the lounge. For my third week I will be changing my shift to later in the week. I look forward to interacting with more visitors!

Perhaps Monday was lull before the storm, because the next couple days were each unique and exciting.

Tuesday we had a couple batches of high school students from the youth development organization 4-H come through the gallery and learning lounge. The first group was around 15 or so students. They first received a tour of the gallery courtesy of Adrián before gathering in the Learning Lounge for an activity with Emily. I helped with prepping the activity and shuttling people around. In the lounge they explored activism through art and created their own storyboards for a 60 second PSA on a social issue of their choosing. As a nonpartisan museum, the activity is designed such that participants are free to choose their own social issues. It is always interesting to see what issues stand out to which people and why. Overall this was a busy and enjoyable day. Interacting with the different groups was a great experience.

Wednesday was early day. Early as in I arrived at the museum an hour and a half before the museum opened to the public. This was in preparation for a group of congressional interns who were at the museum to receive a tour of the gallery. Led by Emily and the power of a mini speaker system, the group toured the Presente exhibit.

Thursday was the crescendo of a week that just kept ramping up. I worked from home and arrived to the museum at 4:00 for the tour scheduled for senator Bob Menendez. My only regret is not challenging him to a game of double nines dominoes.
