National Museum of Mexican Art - Christian Malagon-Bravo, Week 1

Hi everyone! This past week I've been having so much fun with the campers and getting to know them and their interest as their youth mentor. At the NMMA, I have been tasked with making a NMMA en Casa video for the museum's YouTube channel. At the moment, Jessica and I are going to be making an "Ojo de Dios" craft, first made by the Huichol in Mexico. My day usual consists of assisting Leslie, the folkloric dance instructor, with her dance lesson. Then, we do an art activity with a focus on storytelling with one of the instructors. Each week of camp there is a different instructor that organizes the activities for that whole week. Next, we do lunch and recess. Followed by another art activity. Finally, once all the campers get picked up, the youth mentors work together to summarize the day into an e-mail that is sent to all the instructors of the camp.

My internship and Washington Week both helped me connect with my own culture because I didn't go to museums or was able to go to summer camps like the one provided by the NMMA. My experience so far has taught me to be patient with the young campers because everyone is full of energy and talk very fast. They are excited and sometimes I don't understand the first time, so I ask them to repeat what they said. But, they say it at the same speed. Moments like this are when I need to take a deep breath and help the camper also take a deep breath so that we can both understand each other. The "Frida Kahlo, Her Photos" is my favorite exhibit in all of the museum because it's a collection of her photos from her childhood and they show how she lived her life. I am extremely excited for what activities the campers will work on together next!
