National Museum of Mexican Art - Christian Malagon-Bravo, Week 2
Hello everyone! I hope you all had a great first week at your internship. Last week, we got a lot of work done for our NMMA en Casa video! We wrote a script, made examples of "Ojos de Dios" and we researched the history behind the object. We are very excited to start recording!
This week we focused on magical/spooky stories! We started of the week with sketching and painting a canvas with model magic to give the art texture and make certain things pop out. Such as, the sun, a shark, and a soul eating bunny that can shape shift into a human! We also listen to the legend of "La Llorona" and "El Cucuy."
On Wednesday we took a field trip to the Brookfield Zoo to gain inspiration from all the animals and plants for our sculptures that we were going to make later that week. Something that I liked that the camp did was divided the campers and assign them a mentor. This worked because we were able to go anywhere in the Zoo when we wanted. This gave freedom to the campers to tell us what they wanted to see and make the trip more personalized to them.
Thursday and Friday we worked on the magical plant and beast sculptures. Everyone was given a small clay flower pot that they could fit their magical plant into. This activity was inspired by the Harry Potter "Mandrake" which is a plant that has a root that looks like a human and it's cry can cause a human to pass out and even die.
This week the campers were able to let their imagination fly when they created their own magical plant and beast and it was very interesting to see where their mind would take them. I couldn't be with the campers during their folkloric dance rehearsal, but the other youth mentor told me they improved so much and they are learning new dances. I'm excited to see what the campers will do next!!
