Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science- Amanda Saiz, Week 3

Hey everyone!

Even though I've already been at the Frost museum for three weeks, I can gladly say that each week provided me new experiences and opportunities. This week, I worked with various departments in the office and helped with a variety of educational tasks.

Sometime last week, I was introduced to Sarah. She gave me some insight on the field trip scheduling within the museum, demonstrating the lengthy process she goes through to ensure the museum is not overbooked and can accommodate each group visiting. I really don't know how she does it because it took her about ten minutes to briefly explain the process to me as she was doing it- with just one group! I never really thought about the fact that there was a person behind this work. I always assumed it was a computer. But, as Sarah said, some things just require a human touch.

Not only did I learn about Sarah's job at the museum, but I also helped Jahna (in the Education department) develop a Powerpoint that will be presented to the kids on Week 9. Although tedious, I had a lot of fun playing around with the graphics and making it interactive for the kids. I also learned how to develop Powerpoint on Canva- a webpage I had used previously, but never even knew you could create Powerpoints on. I'm excited for the kids to be able to enjoy this Powerpoint. I know I had lots of fun making it.

Although I was not at the museum on Wednesday, I did meet with Cory to continue discussing the future of an exhibit. This week, we discussed a future station that will take place within this exhibit and he gave us a very interesting task. He provided us with the station's budget and gave us the freedom to develop our vision for this station. He asked us to document our goals for this exhibit and the media we plan to use to communicate our message, while maintaining our plans on budget.

Aside from these tasks, I also helped Nevski with education, preparing name tags for the kids and assisting with materials. On Monday, I actually learned how to do sign-out, which I hadn't done before. It was nice to enjoy the Miami weather. Sometimes we Floridians take it for granted!

As my time at the Frost will soon be coming to an end, I am attempting to take advantage of the opportunities I am granted. On July 29th (this Friday), I will actually be participating in a MUVE program with Lauren Reilly (MUVE coordinator), where I will help plant native plants in the coastal hammock. I'm definitely beyond excited for that!

I was also granted the opportunity to write a blog post for the museum, by Elizabeth Ricardo Binding and Kristen Garcia, which will be based on my experience. I will be sure to include the link to that blog post when it gets posted!

Sincerely,

Amanda Saiz
