Week 1: July 5-12, 2022

7/5 DAY 1
As soon as I’d arrived at the museum my supervisor was waiting to greet me at the entrance. Ms. Lessli is the director of public programs, which is the department I’d be working with. All of the staff is very nice and welcoming! The first day was mostly training and getting familiarized with the campus. I had two separate trainings on this day. The first one had to deal with the summer camps the museum holds weekly. Some other Interns and I were walked through basic duties and safety procedures. We were also given a “camp tour” that highlighted the main parts of the campus that the camps could be held in. After this training I got to meet with Ms.Pamela who is in charge of facilitating the process of welcoming new interns and volunteers. She taught me how to make my way around the museum and issued me my uniforms, badge, and other things needed for the job. Once I was done with training I spent the rest of the day getting to know and helping out the public programs staff in prepping for the “art of nature” camp that would be held the following week.

7/6 DAY 2
As we waited for more training, I was taught how to take photos from iPads, upload them onto the main computer and then convert them into compatible files. Later on Mr.Daemon taught us how to tend to the gardens and the HEB Body Adventure center. There are two gardens that the public programs take care of. The first one is currently holding some summer fruits and vegetables such as watermelons, cucumbers, corn stalks, jalapeños, bell peppers and tomatoes. Our other garden is smaller and grows herbs including rosemary, mint, basil and more. I really like watering the smaller garden cause we use water from our river! The museum was built on the San Antonio river so we have a pump that brings some of the water to a water works station.
After the gardens we open up the HEB Body Adventure center. We were taught how to check all the machines to see if they’re working and fix them if they're not.

7/7 DAY 3
Day 3
Today was another day of camp prep. The other volunteers and I spent the entire day preparing some paper mache balloons for an arts and craft project that would be used in the art of nature camp. After spending a whole day with sticky hands you can really appreciate what goes on behind the scenes of these programs. A lot of thought and planning goes on for all the events.

7/8 DAY 4
Another day of camp prep! Today me and the volunteers made cloth pouches for a “Dino camp”. After that we split up and started working paper projects and prepping activity bags that contained all the pieces to make flower presses.

7/11 DAY 5
Today was the first day of camp! We had two separate camps going on at the same time so usually the volunteers will move between the two. I spent the first half of the day helping out the art of nature camp. I would help the kids with their projects if they needed it, and make sure all the areas are tidy. Afterwards I got to spend a little time with the cooking camp but then I had a meeting with the founding and acting deputy director of NMAL. Mr. Jorge and Mr. Eduardo had came to San Antonio for a conference but they stopped by the museum. We got to go on a little tour with some of the staff of the Witte including Ms. Pam, Ms. Alanna (a YAP alumni) and even the CEO of the museum Ms. Maurice. After the tour we went to the conference room to discuss Washington Week and how the internship has been going so far. It was a nice conversation :)
