Holocaust Museum Houston-Eliana Streeter, Week 1

 Hello Everyone!

This past week on July 5th, I began my internship with the Holocaust Museum Houston in their very own Education Department. My job is to find ways in which to engage the younger demographic of Houston with the museum. Last week I began researching youth initiatives of other museums around the Houston area and our nation including the following: Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Houston Museum of Natural Science, The Lone Star Flight Museum, The United States Holocaust Museum, The National September 11th Memorial Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and many more.

Being a part of the Education Department I have gotten to learn more about their student and community programs. For example, "Educator in Motion" brings museum educators to the classroom for free to talk about topics such as the Holocaust, Human Rights, and Active Citizenship. This sparks healthy dialogue in the classroom about our human rights throughout history, and our roles in society today.

Another example would be their program entitled "Engines of Change Student Ambassador Program" which encourages young leaders from the Houston area to recognize and confront hate and prejudice in society.

Towards the end of the week, I also got the chance to tour the "Notorious RBG" Exhibit. She is a well-known government figure known to fight many cases for gender equality and was a strong human rights advocate. It was so enlightening being able to track her career and sense of purpose from when she was a little girl to her days as a Supreme Court Justice. I left the exhibit feeling inspired by the power that this generation holds when we truly band together and fight for women's rights.

After completing my first week, I already learned so much about the inner workings of the museum as well as the importance of education and perspective when it comes to more somber moments in history. I can't wait to continue to grow as I learn more about my city, collaborate with all different museum departments, and bring my Latina lens to serve the greater Houston community through the museum!
